Welcome to January, SJV Community!
A new calendar year is upon us. Did you know that the Catholic liturgical calendar is jam-packed with goodness in Jauary? Starting on January 1st we
celebrate the Solemnity o f Mary, the Holy Mother of God. We honor Mary under her highest title on this day. On January 2nd we follow the three Magi as they come to honor the baby Jesus as we celebrate the Solemnity of the Epiphany. January 3rd celebrates the Holy Name of Jesus. These are just a few of the wonderful days that make a Catholic January special! Consider a New Year’s resolution to read more about the liturgical feast days, the saints, or other form of spiritual growth this year!
The Epiphany: Blessing Your Home
...
As we celebrate the Solemnity of the Epiphany, we can participate in the custom of blessing our homes. Typically this blessing is done on the frame of the front door to your home.
Pray: Bless O Lord God, this home, that in it there may be health, purity, strength, humility, goodness and mercy, the fulfillment of Thy law, the thanksgiving to God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. And may the blessing remain on this home and upon all who dwell herein. Through Christ Our Lord, Amen.
After the prayer, inscribe in chalk the year along with the initials C, M, B representing the names of the three Magi and the Latin Phrase “Christus mansionem benedicat” which means “Christ bless this house” on the top of the door frame.

January- Also This Month!
Changing of the Liturgical Seasons
January’s days are split between two different liturgical seasons. We wrap up the Christmas season which takes us through the baptism of our Lord. The Christmas season is represented by white, marking a time of light, joy and purity. Beginning the week of January 10th, we move into ordinary time. This season is marked by the color green and represents hope in the eternal heavenly harvest. This is a time for spiritual growth in our lives. For more on liturgical seasons & colors, please see the chart below.
