Welcome to December, SJV Community!

It’s December and the season of Advent is upon us!  The word advent means “coming.”    Just as the Israelites waited generations for the coming of Christ,

we as Catholics renew our sense of anticipation for Chirst each year during the season of advent. For four Sundays leading up to Christmas, we are invited to renew and satisfy our need for Christ in our lives.  Each week of advent has a different focus- hope, faith, joy and peace.  It is a great time to practice acts of penance and service. Reading scripture, the Jesse Tree devotion, or using an advent calendar or advent wreath are all great ways to live the liturgical season of advent!  See page two for more on the advent wreath.

December 6th: Celebrate Saint Nicholas

...

Saint Nicholas was born in the third century to a wealthy family. He dedicated his life to serving God and helping the needy. Eventually he was made Bishop of Myra and became known for his love and generosity towards others.

Many legends are told of the kind acts of Saint Nicholas. Perhaps the greatest is the story of him providing the dowry for three daughters of a poor family by placing bags of gold in the stockings of the girls that were hung drying by their fireplace.

Many people still leave out their shoes on December 5th so Saint Nicholas can leave them a little surprise on his feast day of December 6th!

Exciting December- Also This Month!

December: A Month of Solemnities!

The Catholic Church celebrates two solemnities in the month of December.  Solemnities are feast days of the highest rank and are considered holy days of obligation, meaning the faithful should attend mass on these special days.  We celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary on December 8th and the Solemnity of the Nativity of Our Lord on December 25th.

Reconciliation:

Say a prayer for our second graders who will be receiving their first reconciliation this month!   The Christmas season is a wonderful time for all of us to seek God’s forgiveness through this beautiful sacrament.  Here is the schedule for confessions this advent:

Pray, Study, Love, Serve!

Here are the virtues that our students will be focusing on during the month of December: Prayerfulness, Humility, Patience, Fortitude.
